Imagine my slight dismay to discover that Horsemen is actually a psych-thriller featuring Dennis Quaid as a detective on the hunt for a group of killers that have styled their murders on the legend of the Four Horsemen. Instead of Zhang Ziyi co-starring as Quaid’s kick-butt partner she is instead the daughter of one of the Horsemen’s victims.
The film opens with the first grizzly introduction of the creepy killers via a tray of teeth. Freshly ripped from some poor soul’s unwilling jaw kinda teeth. Then the murders begin. Each one depicts the victim strung up by hooks through their skin (aka body suspension). The person is then stabbed to allow blood to fill the lungs so he/she drowns on his/her own blood. What Detective Breslin (Dennis Quaid) has to uncover is the motive of the murders and the link between the victims. The race is on to find either the killers or the fourth victim before he or she is sacrificed. Breslin fears that the fourth and final murder could bring forth a real life Apocalypse.

I felt that Horsemen was a mixture of the religious overtones similar to The DaVinci Code with the grizzly “Horsemen” themed murders similar to the “Deadly Sin” fatalities we saw in Seven along with the sub-culture references (tattooing, piercing, suspension) that formed the foundation for Strangeland.

Accompanying the murders is Detective Breslin’s fractured home life that never fully recovered after his wife passed.
This is most evident when it comes to his neglect of his two sons Alex (Lou Taylor Pucci) and Sean (Liam James). I wish the writers had clearly stated why Breslin constantly and so easily ditched his sons to chase suspects. Instead, I had to fill in the blanks myself by assuming he didn’t hate the boys or hate being dad. But being around the boys brought back memories of his long departed wife and in order to fully escape those memories he had to ignore his past even if it meant hiding from his own children.
